The next Marco Polo European Info Day will take place in Brussels on the 28th of June. The first results of the 2011 Marco Polo Call, as well as the 2012 Call for Proposals will be presented at this event. It will be again a great opportunity for business to meet and exchange views on their projects with the Marco Polo team of the EACI.

Marco Polo aims to ease road congestion and its attendant pollution by promoting a switch to greener transport modes for European freight traffic. Companies with viable projects to shift freight from roads to greener modes like railways, sea-routes and inland waterways can turn to Marco Polo for financial support. More than 500 companies have already done so successfully since the programme was launched in 2003. Every year, a new batch of projects qualify for funding. The 2011 Marco Polo call for proposals closed on 16th of January 2012. The evaluation process is under finalisation and the applicants will be notified of the results by the end of April.

The 2012 Marco Polo Work Programme was adopted by the European Commission on 19th of March 2012.

There 2012 Call Text is expected to be published in early June.

International trade fair for shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology (SMM) in Hamburg

The 25th International Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology Trade Fair in Hamburg from 4-7 September is expected to be a sell-out. Altogether, more than 2,000 exhibitors from more than 60 countries are expected - comprising everything from specialised SMEs to global ship building corporations.

One important and popular focus of the conference will be “Green Shipping“, an area increasingly seen as crucial because of the growing environmental demands and restrictions to which the industry must adapt. On top of such regulatory requirements is the need for greater fuel-efficiency due to ever rising energy costs.
In the “Ship Finance Forum“, stricter banking rules that make the financing of ship construction more complex will be under discussion, along with alternatives to traditional forms of finance.

Gas Fuelled Ships Conference in Bergen, Norway

From 12 to 14 September 2012, Bergen, Norway will host the 3rd Gas Fuelled Ships Conference. It will stress the fact that further investment to reduce emissions are needed quickly, being driven by increasingly tough environmental regulations. LNG is seen as one of the most promising maritime fuel to achieve these targets.

However, green issues and environmental legislation potentially increase costs; switching to cleaner fuels could be the solution and, with an abundant supply of natural gas, LNG is becoming the most promising maritime fuel.

Topics at the 2012 Conference will include:
- How far have we come with LNG as a ship fuel and what’s the future?
- Regulatory development and outlook
- Operational experiences from ship operators
- Financial implications of LNG
- Infrastructure
- Bunkering
- Ships: Design concepts, new builds v retrofitting

The following types of organisations will be attending:
- Shipping companies including ship owners, ship operators, ship management and charter parties
- Classifications societies
- Manufacturers and designers of marine engines and related components
- Naval architect and consultants
- Oil and fuel suppliers
- Designers and builders of marine engines and related components
- Universities involved with maritime courses and research projects
- Government officials and civil servants (IMO, EU, national governments)
- Port executives, marine terminal operators and key port users
- Environmental societies

The 2nd Gas Fuelled Ships Conference in 2011 held in association with The Motorship, saw a full house of architects, shipyards, designers, shipowners, ship managers, agents, classification societies and manufacturers coming together to discuss and exchange ideas on the use of LNG as a fuel for ships.

World Coal Conference in Istanbul

The World Coal Conference brings together stakeholders from all over the world in order to deal with the present and future state of the coal market. Economic outlooks, coal sourcing stragies, price developments and many more topical issues will be discussed. There will also be a panel discussion focusing on vessel transport. The last conference attracted more than 1300 participants from 61 countries. This year`s demand is expected to be as high.

The following aspects, among others, will be discussed:

- The global economic outlook and consequences for coal trading volumes.
- The changing face of Asia - As Asia's coal sector continues to boom, how are international supply trends affecting Europe's coal sourcing?
- Coal sourcing strategies – Blending is taking a greater role as lower CV coal arrives on the market. -- - What are the trends in procurement strategies and how are utility companies using the spot market to make up their coal procurement requirements?
- Coking coal prices have fallen for three consecutive quarters and stockpiles remain high. The conference will examine emerging factors behind the settling of contract prices and sufficiency of demand to consume additional sources of supply e.g. Mozambique and Mongolia.
- Bunker prices are accounting for up to 70% of shipping costs. In a market that is continuing to suffer from oversupply, how are attitudes to lay-up and scrapping changing and at what point will supply and demand balance out? Join us for a panel discussion made up of key players in the global dry bulk shipping industry.
- Natural gas reached decade low prices this year. A look at the interplay between coal and gas prices and the impact of the shale gas revolution in the US.
- Preparing for the future - How far are we along the path of making carbon capture and storage technology economically feasible? What is in store for carbon pricing and the role of the EU emissions trading scheme in 2013 and beyond?

Under the motto “Smarter on the Way”, ITS Vienna 2012 will deal with the benefit of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) for all traffic users. The focus lies on mobility and innovative national and transnational solutions for improving transport systems: seamless connections, good customer service and sustainability of the whole transport system.

Which IT solutions make transport safer and more efficient? How do these solutions have to be interlinked? What kind of responsibility do policy makers have? These are some of the questions addressed at this year’s ITS World Congress. Around 1,000 expert presentations, including, for the first time, dedicated Strategic Sessions, will be held. The parallel exhibition with comprise stands with over 300 international exhibitors from more than 60 countries. At the public day on 25th of October 2012 kids and young professionals will be invited to participate.
